Fixing method

1

Secure fixing straps to the top of the wall at each joint and at maximum 1500mm centres between.

2

Hook the outer flange of the coping under the fixing strap and rotate down on to the strap. The inner flange of the coping is cut away where it coincides with the strap flange.

3

Fit a fastening clip on to the coping flange and slide on to the strap flange to secure the coping.

4

Fit nylon security buttons into the predrilled holes on the drip return, on each side of the fastening clip.

Installation, general
Full fixing instructions are supplied and these must be followed carefully. Alifabs can provide an installation service if required.

Each installation is purpose made. Plan drawings are prepared from site information, showing the positions of all components. When installing, first lay out the pieces on the wall according to the plan, and accurately mark the positions of all fixing straps. Fix corners, junctions etc first, then straight sections between.

Fixing check points
It is essential that the coping is securely fixed to ensure that it will perform satisfactorily. In particular, the following points must be observed.

Straps and clips
All fixing straps and clips supplied must be used, including the half straps for corners and some other situations.

Place packing under the straps to provide a fall of 2° inwards. Use fastening clips at all fixings straps including those intermediate between joints.

Fixings
Ensure that the top of the wall is suitable to take fixings, especially in refurbishment work where brickwork may be in poor condition. Soft bricks, decayed mortar, perforated bricks etc may not provide an adequate fixing. Use four fixings for every strap. Fixings are not supplied by Alifabs as the requirement will depend on the conditions. The minimum recommended fixings are 50mm (2 inch) No. 5 10 roundhead woodscrews. With poor substrates or exposed conditions, longer screws or bolt anchors should be specified. The length of fixings must also allow for the thickness of packing. Fixings must be stainless steel, bright zinc coated or otherwise protected.

Movement
Leave a gap of 2 to 3mm between coping sections at every joint, this will allow for normal movement of the coping and the wall. Standard fixing straps must not be placed over structural movement joints; special fixing straps or joggle clips can be supplied for these conditions.
